Fire-safes work on the principle of phase change. Water cannot exist as a liquid at a temperature higher that 214 degrees Farenheit. Paper combusts at 350-400 degrees farenheit. It is the job of a fire safe to keep the core temperature of its contents below 300 degrees for a prescribed amount of time. It does this with a layer of insulation that contains some water. In order for the contents of the safe to rise above 214 degrees all of the water in the insulation must boil out as steam. The longer the period of protection the greater the cost.

BF or burglary - fire safes combine steel plates and insulated panels. They are often heavier that their single purpose counterparts and may contain exotic elements that are drill, torch or cutting resistant.
